3 New Year’s Tips for Better Heater Upkeep

If you’re interested in saving money on energy bills and having more control over your home climate, taking good care of your heater is a great place to start. Heating systems that are actively cared for won’t waste energy, need as many repairs, or wear out as quickly. Fortunately, all it really takes to get great results from your heater is creating good habits and setting the appliance up for success.

1. Keep a Clean Home

Irritants like dust and dirt can make it much harder for your heater to operate efficiently. These contaminants can clog up your HVAC air filter, ductwork, and air vents. If your home contains an excessive amount of dirt, your heating system will need to work harder and use more energy to do its job. You can prevent this by keeping your home clean. Wipe all of your home’s surfaces with a damp rag on a regular basis, and also take any rugs, towels, and pillows outside and bat them together to shake out the dust.

2. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Keeping up with scheduled maintenance tune-ups will make a huge difference in your heater’s performance. The adjustments that your heating technician makes will allow it to keep you warm without causing your energy costs to skyrocket. This maintenance will also give you the opportunity to learn of any potential problems before they materialize, which may save you hundreds of dollars by avoiding a breakdown.

3. Replace the Air Filter

Changing out your HVAC air filter once a month will prevent it from becoming overly dirty or clogged up. It’s extremely difficult for your heater to pull air through a clogged filter, and forcing it to do so for too long will cost you extra money and shorten your heater’s lifespan.
