How Candles Affect Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is a concern for many Americans. According to the EPA, the air inside our homes could have concentrations of pollutants two to five times higher than the air outside. Tobacco smoke, dust, VOCs, and biological spores are common culprits for IAQ issues. But did you know that if you burn candles, these could also affect your Huntsville home’s air quality?

Do You Know What Is in Your Candles?

The candles that many of us use in our homes seem innocent. Here is a shocker! If you burn candles containing paraffin, you release the same toxins in your home that are made by burning diesel fuel. Paraffin is a petroleum derivative. Gel candles are also petroleum-based.

When you burn a paraffin-based or gel candle, you release carcinogenic toxins and soot into your home’s air. These toxins include:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Benzene
  • Toluene
  • Acetaldehyde
  • Acrolein

Scented Candles Are Not Great Either

Scented candles can also jeopardize the air quality in your home by triggering allergic reactions from the fumes they give off. Sensitive individuals may experience:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Asthma-like symptoms

People who have existing respiratory issues, like allergies or asthma, may experience a more severe reaction to scented candles.

Healthier Alternatives to Petroleum-Based Candles

Luckily, if you want to burn candles in your home, there are healthier options to choose from that are made from natural materials. Soy candles have become popular because they are non-toxic, produce very little soot, and are less likely to cause allergic reactions. A bonus is they last almost 30% longer than traditional candles. Beeswax candles are another healthy option to consider, even though they are typically more expensive than other candles.
